The Lucy Aims to Shine New Light on Sprawling Creative Community in Downtown Las Vegas

The Lucy, a first-of-its-kind creative community is coming to Downtown Las Vegas. Designed to join modern urban living with spaces to congregate, create and communicate, The Lucy will feature a three-story complex of 12 condominiums housed atop the newly reimagined and relocated bookstore The Writer's Block.

The brainchild of local philanthropist and patron of the arts Beverly Rogers, and derived from the Latin word for light, The Lucy will welcome visiting literary fellows from Black Mountain Institute at UNLV; the Rogers Art Loft - an artist-in-residence program curated in tandem with The Rogers Foundation by Patrick Duffy, President/CEO of Nevada School of the Arts; The Writer’s Block Book Shop and Coffee Shop; and a cadre of individuals as residents who publish, read, create or just want to bask in the joy of living among other creative types.

“I am constantly inspired by the many talented and creatively-inclined people in Las Vegas,” said Rogers. “With that in mind, there has long been a palpable desire and driving thirst for places beyond college campuses for creatives to congregate and be better immersed in the world of the arts – literary, visual and more. To develop this gathering place – a confluence of creativity – all under one roof, is truly a dream come true.”

The Lucy will be anchored by The Writer’s Block. With expanded space and the addition of a coffee shop, the beloved independent bookseller and literacy educator will continue to offer events, readings, book clubs, creative-writing workshops and more to downtown Las Vegas. The bookstore will also serve as the retail headquarters of The Believer magazine, published in Las Vegas by the Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute (BMI)

With nearly all the dozen residences spoken for, three of the units are earmarked for two very distinctive and illuminating arts-centered programs. Beginning in January 2019, two residences will house visiting fellows hosted by BMI. Another unit at The Lucy will welcome visiting artists from the newly-created Rogers Art Loft, a multi-disciplinary artist-in-residence program fueled by The Rogers Foundation and created in partnership with the Nevada School of the Arts. Each program aims to contribute to the cultural landscape in Las Vegas.

Project partners on The Lucy include developers Rob Peccole, Tom Schoeman and Chris Gonya in tandem with architect Tom Schoeman AIA, Jawa Studio and contractor The Korte Company. With completion expected in fall/winter 2018, The Lucy brings a convergence of creativity to the corner of 6th and Bonneville.
